Sheffield Left calls for a vote for socialist candidates at May’s local elections in the City. TUSC is standing in 27 wards and the CPB in 1 ward. These are the only socialist candidates standing in Sheffield and a vote for them in these elections is recommended.
Sheffield Left believes that Sheffield Council should have been doing everything in its power to fight Tory austerity measures, defend the most vulnerable citizens from the worst excesses of the capitalist manufactured, cost of living crisis and promote measures that really combat climate change. Instead the Labour led council, in failing to challenge Tory austerity measures, has played a big part in making the working class pay for the profiteering and corruption of the Tory Government and the capitalist class that they represent.
Living standards continue to plummet as social care, the NHS, social housing, education, social services and welfare benefits are all sacrificed on the altar of neoliberal policies which have proven to be disastrous all over the world.
Sheffield Left supports candidates that promote the unity of working class communities in order to resist further cuts to their living standards and attacks on their democratic rights. Since the racist divide and rule tactics of the Tories, including the criminalisation of refugees and asylum seekers are now being adopted by Starmer’s Labour Party in its public campaigning ads and statements, we need to look beyond the Labour Party, which has forsaken its right to claim to represent those oppressed and exploited by the capitalist class if we wish to seek socialist solutions.
Action on the climate emergency along with nationalisation of key public services and the regeneration of the Welfare State are essential if the current drift to far-right policies is to be halted and the vulnerable, exploited and oppressed are not to be scapegoated for the failings of capitalism.
